Let’s take a look at the rest of the list of summer driving challenges and how you can overcome them.

Work Zones

During the summer, road work increases significantly. There are many factors, including loose rubble, changing traffic patterns, slower speeds, construction workers, and more. It’s crucial to remember that when you approach road construction, you should follow the standard of driving five mph under the flow of traffic to account for sudden stops and other hazards. In fact, rear-end accidents are the most common types of incidents in construction zones. So, be aware of your surroundings and don’t tailgate.

The Weather

You never know what the summer weather will bring you. Not only can it bring high temperatures, but it can also result in storms, high winds, and floods, all of which can bring significant challenges for CDL drivers. Ensure that you’re aware of the weather and areas ahead of you. Don’t underestimate a summer storm and get caught off guard.

Your Brakes

Proper brake adjustment is critical in all seasons, but especially during the summertime, especially on downhill grades. You should always check to ensure your brakes are working properly and functioning adequately.

Proper Hydration

Even though your truck’s air conditioning unit can keep you cool throughout your drives, you can still be at significant risk for dehydration or other issues. Not only can being dehydrated make you feel sick, but it can also fatigue you and leave you in a dangerous condition, increasing the chance that you make a mistake behind the wheel. Consequently, you should always keep a bottle of water near your seat, as well as having an additional bottle in your truck for emergencies.
